Steering wheel massively improved, and for really not much money
Purchased my second 2008 TTS early in 2019. I was happy the first time so figured I would be happy again. Then I remembered my one big issue with the last one! The smooth, thin and uncomfortable steering wheel that seems to plague much of the Audi range. Its bizarre. Same issue I had when I had my S1. A good size steering wheel (height x weight x thickness) makes a big difference to the drive. So few weeks after buying the car, I took booked myself into Royal Steering Wheels in the UK. Had a look at what options they had and spoke to one of their customisers. Really helpful guy who helped me decide on the best option based on my requirement, which was simple... I was the same wheel as the C63 I had just sold. £200 and a week later, they had a steering wheel leathered up and ready to be fitted. Drove down there, they swapped over my wheel and moved all my existing trim onto the new wheel. Simple as that. I decided on the perforated leather on the sides, nappa on the top and bottom and the red racing stripe in the middle. Very nice! I had the wheel I wanted and its made a massive difference to driving the TTS. Feels a lot more stable, comfortable and sporty compared to the original.
Seems that any cars produced under the Volkswagen family suffer from the same issue. Thin steering wheels. Replacing an OEM wheel after a few years it pretty pricey. So as a quick option to refresh your leather, as some cool style or even thicken out your wheel big time, this is a great option and I take any new car back to these guys when I switch again.
